RIP, Barbecue Inn, Asheville
According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, the Barbecue Inn, a 50 year old institution, closed over the Fourth of July weekend. NC barbecue feels the loss.

Well, I'll probably never eat barbecue again. Theirs was the ONLY barbecue in Western North Carolina that I really, really liked. Their side dishes were the best around as well. The hushpuppies were the best I've ever eaten. So...I guess I had my last good barbecue meal on June 23, 2011, the last time I ate at Barbeque Inn.
I will eat barbeque again, but the sentiment expressed is shared...this was the first NC barbeque I ever tasted and was a favorite of mine and my family for over 45 years. Good luck to the Kooles family and thanks for the great BBQ for so many years.
Dave, With this sad string of news about closings, you might want to check out Nelson's Barbecue, which has just opened in Lumberton. (Google it.) Andy Nelson Proce, who runs it, worked for Wilber Shirley and is cooking whole hogs over charcoal -- the first real barbecue in Lumberton for years. Nice to see a young guy working in the Tradition. He deserves to succeed.
