Acceptable - Backyard BBQ Pit - Durham NC

Address - 5204 Hwy 55 Durham, NC 27713 Map
Style - Counter service, sit down restaurant

Backyard Barbecue replaced AW's, which replaced Lewis's in the same building. The interior of the restaurant and the basic menu has not changed through the transitions.

I ordered the barbecue plate with potato salad and brunswick stew. It came with a handful of hushpuppies. The potato salad and hushpuppies were okay. The brunswick stew was decent tasting, but a smaller serving than I would like. The barbecue was much better than what I have had here. However, there was a mild aftertaste that caused me to not want to finish the plate.

I have heard that even though the ownership has changed, the barbecue master has stayed the same. This is great for continuity, but, in this case, the barbecue has not improved over time.

The picture reminds me of the type of bbq restaurant I've always envisioned owning in the future. I might have to take a road trip to check it out.

It is really good bbq! Still cooked with wood, it was excellent!

I have to say I was underwhelmed by the BBQ there. I went off-peak, ordered BBQ, collards, cabbage and hushpuppies. Sides were great, hushpuppies were decent, a bit cakey, BBQ was, well, cold and soggy. Went again a couple weeks later, ordered a fried pork chop, much, much better. Wife ordered fried chicken, high marks as well.

I really like this place. The barbecue is wood-cooked fresh each day, and when you order fried okra they fry it to order. (That's one dish that should never be served from a steam table.) The Brunswick stew isn't up to the standard set by the other dishes (so just don't order it).

Backyard with it's family operation is quite simply the best food and atmosphere in the area. From good ol' boys, construction workers, RTP folks, families, NC visitors, all races, colors, sizes and ages....all there for fine, pulled pork and all the 'fixin's. Family members greet you as a sister, cousin, distant relative just stopping by for a visit and dinner/lunch/takeout. Their signature, or rather YOUR signature on the wall leaves a bit of 'hi' there for the family to see and read and for YOU to see when you return. SMILES all around. From the first big hi from the woman at the steam table, to the 'drive safe' from the guy taking out the trash as you leave you feel that down home WELCOME and welcome again when you return to the Backyard BBQ. I have eaten at BBQ restaurants from NC to Texas and have to say that I have never tasted better tasting pork ribs, period! The food here is great overall but the ribs are spectacular. The restauarant is a throwback of sorts with down home family friendly customer service and a very loyal customer base. I could tell this as the staff called several customers by name. In a state where BBQ is King this is a crown jewel and southern cooking!

You did not give enough detail to tell if you even ate at this restaurant. It is a NC wood burner. They do need to develop a sig sauce. The sides are excellent. Desserts are even decent which I can't say for many NC BBQ joints.
