Murray's BBQ & Seafood is no more

I'd heard that Murray's had closed, but it wasn't clear which one, so I drove by Murray's BBQ & Seafood on Old Poole Road to check. On the door is a hand written sign that says "Out of Business". This is too bad, since it was one of my favorite red-neck barbecue places. Thanks to Richard, details in this News and Observer article.

Now if Don Murray's on Capital were to close, no tears would be shed.

Interesting article. I had heard that Murray's was one the restaurants that Don Murray had after he sold Don Murray's on Capital, name and all. The Barbecue Lodge was one such, as mentioned in his obituary, posted below.

Thank you for the reference.

Murray's Barbeque on Old Poole Road closed more than two years ago. Lloyd May, long time owner and friend died about a year later. Don Murray's Barbeque on Capitol Blvd closed the summer of 2006. "HM" Hines, also a long time friend, retired. While you may not shed any tears, there was a huge following that loved the lunch buffet and the "Q" there and it is missed...it was one of the last places in this area that you could still get "for real" home cooking for lunch at a decent price.

Lloyd May had some of the best BBQ and the very best Brunswick stew I ever ate. sometimes Lloyd would bring some over to the store across the street where I had a part-time job in the winter. I was around 12 or 13. Around 1973.

I am sad to hear this. I was planning a trip to NC and wanted to see if it were still open. I remember in the 90's going there often for lunch. It was the absolute best bbq I had ever, and has never been topped to date IMO. A regular plate of pulled pork with fries and slaw and hush puppies and of course sweet tea...you left the place STUFFED.
